Our legal services start and end with a client-focused approach that protects your legal rights.
Securing a valid work permit is a critical step for international professionals looking to gain valuable experience and build a career in Canada.
What it is?
A work permit allows foreign individuals to legally work in Canada for a designated duration. It does not, on its own, provide permanent residency, but it can lead to it.
Type of Work Permits:
- Employer-Specific (Closed) Work Permit – Tied to a single employer and place. Typically requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) unless there is an exemption.
- Open Work Permit – Permits employment with any employer in Canada. It is often available to:
- Spouses/common law partners of students or skilled workers
- International Graduates (Post-graduation Work Permit)
- Individuals awaiting permanent residency decisions
Application Steps:
- Determine eligibility – Use the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website to respond to several questions and determine the appropriate work permit and program for your situation.
- Obtain a job offer (if required) – To obtain an employer-specific permit, a valid job offer from a Canadian employer is required, along with a positive LMIA, if necessary.
- Prepare your documents – Collect all the required paperwork, which may consist of:
- A valid passport and additional travel documents
- Your employment offer letter and LMIA (if relevant).
- Evidence of your academic credentials and professional experience.
- Proof that you possess sufficient funds to sustain yourself and your family.
- Results of medical examinations and police clearance certificates, if necessary
- Apply online – Create a secure online account with IRCC. A customized document checklist will be generated according to the responses you give.
- Pay the fees – Make the application fee payments online. The typical fee for processing a work permit is $155 CAD. When applying for an open work permit, there is an extra fee of $100 CAD for holders.
- Provide Biometrics – Once you have submitted your application, you will obtain a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL) from IRCC. You must schedule an appointment to provide your fingerprints and photo at an authorized collection service location.
- Receive your work permit – If your application receives approval, you will obtain an approval letter. If you are applying from outside Canada, you will get an introductory letter to show at a Canadian entry point, where your work permit will be formally granted.
