Understanding the Express Entry system is the first step toward building a successful career and future in Canada.
What it is?
Express Entry is the primary system for overseeing skilled worker immigration to Canada. Applicants create an online profile and are assessed utilizing the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Individuals with the top scores obtain an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. Your application is managed under one of three federal immigration programs.
Express Entry Programs:
Express Entry covers three federal economic immigration programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For skilled workers with foreign work experience. To qualify, candidates must have a minimum of one year of continuous full-time or equivalent paid experience in a skilled job over the last 10 years.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For experienced workers with current Canadian employment history. You need to have a minimum of one year of full-time skilled work experience in Canada in the past three years.
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For experienced professionals in a specialized trade. You need a minimum of two years of full-time employment in a skilled trade over the last five years.
Application Process:
- Check Eligibility: Through the government’s online tool, see if you qualify for any of the Express Entry Programs.
- Gather Documents: Collect all required documents, such as language test results, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign education, and proof of work experience.
- Create your Profile: Submit your profile to the Express Entry pool, where you will be assigned a score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
- Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): High-ranking candidates are selected during regular draws from the pool and receive an ITA for permanent residence.
- Submit your application: Upon receiving an ITA, you must submit a full application for permanent residence and pay the required fees within 60 days.
- Receive a decision: The government examines your entire application and aims to finalize it within six months.
What is the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS):
The CRS is a points-driven system employed to assess and rank applicants in the Express Entry pool. A better score enhances your likelihood of getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Your rating is determined by elements including:
- Age
- Level of Education
- Language Proficiency
- Canadian Work Experience
- Additional factors such as provincial nomination, French language skills, or having family in Canada
Required Documents for Application:
To submit your Express Entry profile and later complete the full application, you will be required to prepare the following documents:
- Valid Passport
- Language Test Results (e.g. IELTS or CELPIP)
- Proof of funds to support yourself in Canada
- Police Certificates
- Medical Examination Results
